History of Sabang Free Port
In 1896, Sabang was opened as a free port for general trade and as a port of transit for Deli agricultural products which had been an area of tobacco plantations since 1863.
Quoted from Wikipedia, in World War II in 1942, Sabang was occupied by Japan and made the base of the western defense. This caused Sabang to be closed as a free port.
Then through Presidential Decree Number 10 of 1963, Sabang was again designated as a Free Port and its implementation was handed over to the High Command of Economic Operations (KOTOE). In 1985 the status of Sabang as a Region of Free Trade and Free Ports was closed by the Government of Indonesia through Law No. 10 of 1985, citing the rise of smuggling and the opening of Batam as a Free Port and Free Trade Zone.
In 1993 Sabang's position began to be recalculated with the establishment of the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Regional Economic Cooperation. In 2000, President Abdurrahman Wahid launched Sabang as a Free Port and Free Trade Area and on January 22, 2000, Presidential Instruction Number 2 of 2000 was issued concerning Sabang free port.
